I don’t know about the rest of you, but I felt the immense weight of negativity that came with 2016. The whole of the Internet seemed to think it was just the worst year ever and with the barrage of sad stories coming through… I almost believed it. So what I think we need is a negativity detox, and to focus on our own happiness for a little while.
Happiness takes work! We have to plan and strive for the things that we want, nothing is ever just handed to you in life! So here are a couple things that you can do to make sure that you are a happier person this year!
Learn to be just a little bit selfish
You heard that right! Be selfish! I’m not saying be a bad person… but you need to think of what you need once in a while. Think about what you need to do for your health and happiness once in a while instead of just what would make others happy. You deserve to be thought of too!
Practice self care
This will always be the best piece of advise that any person can get. Practice self-care, and make sure you take care of your whole self, that’s everything from your emotional, spiritual and physical needs. It’s about taking time do something nice for yourself. Take a bath and paint your toenails. Make yourself your favorite hot drink, curl up and read a book, or go all out and take yourself to the spa. Make time for you when you need it most – even if it’s just 5 minutes!
Don’t try to do everything
Sometimes we set more goals for ourselves than we need to. We want to be that person who does it all and has it all. It’s overwhelming and stressful trying to be that person. So let go of that urge to be Martha Stewart, and sit back and relax. Your home might not always be clean, smell of baking and be perfectly decorated, but you will be calm and happy.
Make a plan
It’s important to have a plan for what you really do what in your life. Like I said before, good things don’t just happen to you, you have to work for them. My advice, find a planner system that works for you and USE it! Like daily! If you’re not planning happiness into your life, you won’t be happy.
Get away from it all
Start your planning with a weekend get away! Either go by yourself and really spend some time getting refocused or go on an adventure with your bestie and laugh a little! Take this time to cut out (or at least cut back) on your time spent in front of screens, or checking social media. We all could use a techno-cleanse once in a while.
Take a walk, go for a swim, do some yoga…whatever your pleasure just get up and do it. Move those limbs and make those muscles work. If you don’t use it, you loose it, and no one wants that! Getting the blood pumping isn’t just good for you physically but the chemicals triggered by physical activity make us happier and help fight stress!
We all need a little art therapy now and then. Being creative is good for your health! Adult coloring books have gotten so popular for a reason. If you’re not one for staying inside the lines, get yourself set up with a canvas, paint and brushes and create a masterpiece. If you’re looking for something a little different, look up Zentangles, they are so much fun and so easy to do!
So if you want to make this year the best one ever, take some time to work on your own happiness. Make time for you and your needs and never feel guilty about it. You deserve to feel happy and relaxed. So take it easy and have a little fun. Life doesn’t need to be too serious!
