Nina Redmond is a literary matchmaker. Pairing a reader with that perfect book is her passion . . . and also her job. Or at least it was. Until yesterday, she was a librarian in the hectic city. But now the job she loved is no more.
Determined to make a new life for herself, Nina moves to a sleepy village many miles away. There she buys a van and transforms it into a mobile bookshop that she drives from neighborhood to neighborhood, changing one life after another with the power of storytelling.
From helping her grumpy landlord deliver a lamb to sharing picnics with a charming train conductor who serenades her with poetry, Nina discovers there’s plenty of adventure, magic, and soul in a place that’s beginning to feel like home . . . a place where she just might be able to write her own happy ending.
I must admit I took this book from the 14 Day shelf under the recommendation of my favorite librarian, who hasn’t read the book yet. Why? Two reasons. I trust her, and the author, Jenny Colgan has written for one of my favorite shows, Dr. Who.
The title misleads. Which corner? As the bookstore is not what you imagine. Nina, a bibliophile who can match any book to its perfect reader, was the perfect librarian. But, with the dawn of modern computers and internet, human librarians have been made redundant. Seeing an ad for a large, used van in Scotland, and having an overlarge stock of books, Nina sets off to find her new life.
A clever story about a mobile bookshop, hence, not on any corner, she ends up in a small town in Scotland, and finds love, friendship and a sense of purpose that she was lacking in Birmingham. Overall a nice, easy afternoon read. The lure of a good book and happy, down to earth people in a peaceful town was perfect. Well written, and light, I would classify this as a light romance novel. This was a quick read with traces of humor and romance, as well as due homage to classic books that all fellow bibliophiles will love.
